How to reach Selayar.

Every route goes through Makassar. From there it's a short flight to H. Aroeppala Airport, or a night bus and a ferry, which is how our open trips travel.

Option 1

By air

  1. Fly to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) in Makassar.
  2. Take a domestic flight from Makassar to H. Aroeppala Airport (KSR) in Benteng, Selayar's main town.

Wings AirTuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. From IDR 900.000. Book through an online travel agent.

Option 2

By bus and ferry

  1. From Makassar, travel about 200 km south to Bira Port. The drive takes 5 to 6 hours by bus or shared car.
  2. Take the ferry from Bira to Pamatata Port on Selayar. The crossing takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on the sea.
  3. From Pamatata, the road runs south to Benteng.

When to go

  • West coast and Taka Bonerate: April to November, when the western seas are calm.
  • East coast: November to April.
  • Flying home from Makassar? Book a flight after 19.00 on the last day.

Pack for the tropics

  • Sunscreen, a hat and light clothes.
  • A refillable water bottle, to keep plastic off the islands.
  • Take your rubbish home, and don't touch the reef.
